  • 4 slices thick-cut white bread or sourdough Thick-cut bread for optimal texture.
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened For spreading on bread.
  • 1/2 cup pizza sauce or marinara sauce For layering.
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded low-moisture mozzarella cheese For gooey texture.
  • 1/2 cup shredded provolone cheese For extra flavor.
  • 24 slices mini pepperoni Alternately use 12 regular slices.
Seasoning (Optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning Adds flavor depth.
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder For added aroma.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Lay all slices of bread on a flat surface and lavishly spread butter on one side of each slice.
  2. Flip the slices over and evenly spread pizza sauce on the unbuttered side of two slices.
  3. Layer the mozzarella and provolone cheese over the sauced slices.
  4. Arrange the pepperoni slices on top and sprinkle with Italian seasoning, garlic powder, and red pepper flakes.
  5. Close up the sandwiches with the remaining slices, buttered side facing up.
Cooking
  1. Heat a heavy-bottomed cast iron skillet over medium-low heat.
  2. Place the sandwiches in the skillet and cook for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown and the cheese is melted.
  3. Allow to rest for 1-2 minutes, slice diagonally, and serve immediately.

Notes

For a healthier option, use whole grain bread, add vegetables, and use healthier fats. Can be made vegan or gluten-free using appropriate substitutions.
